This modern retelling of Bluebeard/Mister Fox with a paranormal twist is truly amazing. It has been a long time since I have been so enthralled with a book. I actually finished it a few days ago and still can not get it out of my head. Not only did she retell one of the darkest fairy tales I know, but she did it in a way that kept me guessing. At times I actually felt bad for Dev, the homicidal serial killer. True Story. I wanted for him to be able to get some kind of happiness. What is up with that? Amazing writing is what.

The characters are what made this book more then just a retold fairy tale. Saintly was beautiful, complex and a whole lot of confused about her "gift" of sight. Jesse is lost, broken, kind and dead. Dev is immortal, deadly, charming and sort of a victim himself. Filled with darkness, suspense, honesty, love and hope, this book is one I will read again. I actually plan to get it in paperback as well as my e-version. It was that good.

This is an New Adult book and I do not recommend it for teens due to some of the darkness and some of the honest portrayals of topics; including suicide and the mental health system.

Kissing Midnight eBook Laura Bradley Rede Reviews

What a great story and creepy story of Ghosts, Demons, Immortals and Love. I loved this story Laura really knows how to work spooky and love stories into one terrific tale. I would give it 10 stars .It is a must read. Dev a demon who has lived for 4 hundred years with a curse of immortality, but the glitch is every year at the strike of midnight he must kiss a girl he has made fall in love with him. Saintly a girl who thinks she is crazy after her brother kills himself and she starts seeing ghosts. Will Dev get her to kiss him at midnight...Tick Tock, Tick Tock, what will happen????,you will want to know.
This was such a great read for so many reasons. You could identify with the characters and I was conflicted at times as I like the "happily ever after" endings but I could emphasise with the bad guy as he was flawed but still likeable at times. Although I know the story of Bluebeard well this modernization incorporated new elements to mix it up a little and there were a few twists in the story that kept me guessing. It touched on a few important issues such as suicide, mental illness and lesbian relationships but these did not overshadow the story itself, it enriched it and gave it that extra depth that is sometimes missing these days from your average story. This book is a credit to the author and should be on everyone's TBR pile.
I started this book on Dec. 22, and finished it Dec. 23. It's been a long time since I've found a book that's kept me this captivated! The story has just enough action to keep things moving at a steady pace. Every time I thought I could set it down, something else happens and I'm totally sucked in. I love the author's play on names with Saintly and Dev. And I love that the author skillfully peeled back layers to the story, only revealing a bit at a time. It made the story truly suspenseful.

I really connected with her character Jesse. I think the story was given an interesting twist by including a lesbian character into the storyline, but more than that, I love that Jesse's fears and self doubt could resonate with anyone.

One thing the author did really well was to make Dev, the evil character, totally irresistible. His motives might have been all bad, but man, that guy had the moves! Let's just say that I have an all new appreciation for temporary tattoos. ;-)

On that note, I appreciate how the author was able to include a few sensual scenes, but didn't cross the line in her details like many YA books tend to do. She gave just enough to make things alluring.

I'm so glad I discovered this author. I would totally recommend this book to anyone.
I love this book so much I want it to be my new best friend. It is my favorite book by LBR (so far). It is listed as New Adult but the very little bit of sex and moderate level of darkness feels Young Adult to me. I certainly have no problem sharing it with my 13 year old daughter who also loves it.

The setting is a college campus, my favorite for young/new adult stories because it makes me nostalgic for my very priveleged college years--those first years of freedom and experimentation within the relatively sheltered confines of dorm and classroom life. The protagonist, the Latina "Saintly" (nicknamed thusly because her last name is Santos), struggles with grief over the tragic loss of her brother and is convinced that her ability to see ghosts is mental illness. Saintly is approached by a sexy, flirtatious stranger who seems quite taken with her and she naively fails to realize that "too good to be true" romance is usually just that. Saintly and her bestie Delia both fall for him. The lesbian ghost whom Saintly can see, and who died in the 1980's becomes another point in the interlocking love triangles.

Despite the harrowing descent into darkness in a haunted psychiatric facility the ending is spiritually satisfying and such a beautifully described visual extravaganza that it must. become. a movie. BUT and this is a big BUT! WITHOUT CHANGING THE IDENTITY OF THE CHARACTERS. It is just so refreshing to find in a paranormal romance a protagonist of color, who speaks Spanish no less; as well as a lesbian ghost from the 1980's, also an original plotline with tons of potential for spinning off with prequels and sequels (please please pretty please!)

LBR's writing style is clear, concise, witty, evocative of feelings and senses. I love the compassion she shows for her characters, even the bad/angry/sad ones. Her suspense scenes flow and burn like lava (but she never uses bad metaphors like that!). She has written a delightful follow up short story for Valentine's Day of 2014 which you can find for free on her web page but do buy and read the book first! If you like this genre, you will love this book.
