The earl of St. Merryn needs a woman his intentions are purely practical.... He needs a fiancée to keep the husband-hunting ladies of the town at bay. His solution is to hire a paid companion, and Miss Elenora Lodge appears to be the perfect candidate.

Elenora's sorry financial circumstances convince her to accept the earl's generous, if scandalous, offer. But the earl soon discovers that the meek and mild companion he'd initially envisioned stirs a bothersome passion in his heart.

As always Amanda Quick writes a good story. And therein lies my problem. I was expecting one of her GREAT stories. This one has almost all that I was looking for. The heroine is educated, organized, and nearly fearless. After losing her inheritance because of a sleazy stepfather, she then loses her fiance when he finds out that she is destitute. After insuring that the workers on her former estate were taken care of, she journeys to London and finds a position as a paid companion in the home of an eccentric woman. When this situation ends, she applies to an agency for other work. Enter the hero. The Earl of St. Merryn is deemed an eccentric by all who know him. He has few close friends and is judged as being extremely cold by most of the Ton. After being jilted by his former fiance, he applies to an agency for a paid companion. This companion is to pretend to be his fiance and provide a distraction as he searches for the killer of his uncle. Elenora proves to be a distraction to him as well as to London society. They quickly become a team in the search for the murderer. ************SPOILER ALERT**********I was engrossed and loving most of the book. The villain was evil personified. However, the ending of the book was spoiled for me when it became a carbon copy of most of the (bad) 1930s to 1950s science fiction movies that I have seen. The death ray machine was too much for me. I actually started to laugh at that point and I am sure that was not the reaction the author wanted.**********END SPOILER************ Quick will always remain a favorite of mine, no matter what name she writes under. But, although this book is good, most of her work is much better.

The Paid Companion (Audible Audio Edition) Amanda Quick Bianca Amato Lamplight Audio Books Reviews

I haven't liked the author's novels that have a whiff of the supernatural quite as much as the ordinary Regency/mystery books, but Ms. Quick's formula for strong-minded heroine meets mysterious rich lord still works. There's always an ongoing secondary romance as well, although in this story that gets less attention than some of her others. Nonetheless, an enjoyable summer read; this is one of my favorite authors.
This is not a book that will prompt you to say, "WOW, I didn't see THAT coming". But it is a great read for a rainy dreary day or night. There are those instances when Elenora (our clever heroine) does dumb things--like follows the villain into a dark, unpopulated garden without any defensive weapon but you know that Arthur will be there in time. Quick develops the story well--both the love story and the mystery. Yes, the Newtonian device is fantastical--think Mel Brooks, not Mary Shelly.
I am not ever disappointed in her books 📚!!! I know that I am always going to be happily surprised by her book!!! I always am!!! This book has mystery intrigue suspense romance humor interesting characters Interesting and unexpected plot twists!!! The story is so captivating that you don't want to put the book down until the end!!! I gave this book five stars because I enjoyed it!!!! Anyone who likes mystery intrigue suspense romance humor interesting characters and unexpected plot twists and the journey will enjoy this book!!! Enjoy yourselves!!!
The premise of the book sounded promising. However within just a few chapters, it became apparent the H&H have zero chemistry. For supposedly being partially a murder mystery, the plot development had no suspense. The heroine was also annoyingly too clever, forward and doing stupid things I find hard to believe were acceptable for that time period. Overall there was just very little character development. I skipped to the last 2 chapter just to finish the book. So disappointed I wasted several hours in this book. Not sure I will read this author again if this is her style of writing.
Loved the H/h characters Arthur and Elenora. I would fall for an Arthur....please?

Loved this mystery/romance so much. I am glad I bought it as I will probably read again sometime.

Usually the books I read have pretty explicit sex scenes. But not this book. They were there but pretty tame in comparison to the norm.

You cannot go wrong with this read. Really held my attention. Thought I had it figured all out but....nope. Funny and heartfelt...just the best.

Great read, sure thing!!
The book itself was wonderful. Whatever happened to it on my is another matter. The book was so good that I waded through the messed up chapters with determination. Every chapter would end and then give me a list of the chapters. They would not open. I had to note each page number at the end of every chapter to "Go To" the page I needed, which either didn't get me there or would go too far and I had to go back page by page to find the beginning of the chapter. Even tried downloading it again. As I said, I like the book so much that I was going to read it not matter how much trouble I had. Never had this problem on before.
Its funny because I have been an Amanda Quick fan since she invented herself with the first historical, the early 1990s? However, I missed this one! I loved this book, I loved the premise. Ms. Quick (Yes, I know she's Jayne Ann Krentz and Jayne Castle) took me back to her earlier books which are wonderful and so full of fun and mayhem. I wonder if she should write a book called "Mayhem," and incorporate all the lovely heroine's and hero's that are her stock in trade.
The reason I say all this is that she has gone to other story lines, while still having the quirky heroines, they are not the same as in the early days. This book took me back. I read her to take myself away from stress, from full time job, full time mom, full time wife, and yet I could settle in for a read and re-read anytime and be happy. The Paid Companion took me back there, to my good old days. Thank you so very much.
I still don't know how I missed this one!! LOL!
